October Meeting

Posted July 29, 2013 at 4:08 PM
GoreyThe special guest speaker during the October 3rd meeting of the Brandermill Region Men’s Club at the Brandermill Church will be Roger Gorey, who combined an avid commitment to walking with his 27 year love affair with the Appalachian Trail, which he developed when he moved to and lived near the Trail in Roanoke for 2years during the mid-80’s.

The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, known simply as the A.T , is a marked hiking trail extending between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine. The precise length of the trail changes over time as trails are modified or added, but the total length is about 2,200 miles, and passes through fourteen states. Most of the trail is in wilderness, although some portions traverse towns, roads and cross rivers.

Completing the entire length in one trip is a mammoth undertaking. Annually, of the thousands of hikers who attempt a “thru-hike” only a few make it all the way. Roger Gorey’s talk will be given on the second anniversary of his having accomplished that feat, at the age of 67, in 193 days, on October 3, 2011,

His program will include visuals as well as an open Q&A period.

We meet at 9:15 in the Multipurpose Room for coffee and refreshments. The regular meeting starts at 10:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.
